Certain dishes do not need long explanations. Their aroma fills the kitchen and instantly reminds us of warm moments from the past. Grandma’s savory roll is exactly that kind of recipe. For many families, it was prepared when guests were expected, when something special was being celebrated, or when a comforting homemade meal was waiting after a long day.

As the sponge base baked in the oven, the scent of dough, cheese and ham would spread through the house. That simple smell often meant that something delicious was about to appear on the table. And once the roll was sliced, its beautiful spiral filling made it even more inviting.
However, this dish was never just about food. It was also about the care put into every step – rolling the warm sponge, preparing the creamy filling and serving it to family members gathered around the table.
Today, preparing grandma’s savory roll is a wonderful way to reconnect with those memories. Even though the ingredients are simple, the result is a soft, flavorful dish that is perfect for gatherings, snacks or light meals.
Ingredients
For the sponge base
- 4 eggs
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 100 ml yogurt
- A pinch of salt
- 50 ml oil
For the filling
- 200 g cream cheese
- 150 g grated ham
- 100 g grated cheese or Trappist cheese
- 2 tablespoons sour cream
- A little black pepper (optional)
- Fresh parsley or dill (optional)
Preparation
Step 1 – Prepare the sponge
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray (approximately 30 × 20 cm) with baking paper.
In a bowl, beat the eggs and salt with a mixer until the mixture becomes light and slightly foamy. Then add the oil and yogurt. Gradually mix in the flour combined with baking powder until the batter becomes smooth.
Pour the mixture evenly into the prepared baking tray and spread it gently.
Bake for about 10–12 minutes, or until the surface becomes lightly golden.
Step 2 – Roll the warm sponge
While the sponge is still warm, carefully roll it together with the baking paper into a loose roll. Leave it this way for around 10 minutes so it cools slightly and keeps its shape.
Step 3 – Prepare the filling
In a bowl combine cream cheese, sour cream, grated ham and grated cheese. Add pepper if desired, and optionally mix in finely chopped parsley or dill for extra freshness.
Stir everything together until you obtain a creamy and evenly mixed filling.
Step 4 – Assemble the roll
Once the sponge has cooled, gently unroll it and remove the baking paper.
Spread the prepared filling evenly over the surface. Then roll the sponge again, this time without the paper.
Wrap the roll tightly in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least one hour so it firms up.
Serving
After chilling, slice the roll into neat rings and arrange them on a plate. It can be served with yogurt, fresh tomatoes or even as a side dish with soup.
Additional Tips
For a slightly stronger flavor, you can add a small amount of mustard to the filling. Fresh lettuce leaves can also be placed inside the roll for extra freshness.
If you prefer spicier food, a few drops of chili sauce will add a pleasant kick to the dish.
