Grandma’s Jam Strudel – A Simple Homemade Classic

Everyone carries certain food memories from childhood. Sometimes it is a particular smell that instantly brings us back years – the scent of a freshly baked cake coming from the kitchen. Walking into grandma’s house often meant being welcomed by warm aromas of dough, sugar and homemade jam. Those smells were more than just ingredients; they represented comfort, family and the feeling of being at home.

Grandma’s cakes were rarely complicated. They didn’t require expensive ingredients or elaborate decorations. Instead, they relied on simple pantry staples and careful preparation. Most of the time the measurements were done “by eye”, yet the results were always wonderful.

What truly made grandma’s cake special was the atmosphere in which it was made. A wooden spoon mixing the dough, jars of homemade jam in the cupboard, and a cloth gently covering the dough while it rises – these small details created the magic behind the recipe.

In today’s fast-paced world filled with industrial desserts, recipes like this remind us how satisfying simple homemade baking can be. For that reason, this jam-filled strudel remains one of the most beloved traditional sweets. Even without fancy decoration, its flavor easily wins hearts.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 500 g flour
  • 1 packet dry yeast (or about 20 g fresh yeast)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 250 ml lukewarm milk
  • 80 ml oil
  • 1 egg

Filling

  • 300–400 g thick plum jam (homemade if possible)
  • Optional: ground walnuts or a pinch of cinnamon

Topping

  • 1 egg (for brushing)
  • Powdered sugar for sprinkling

Preparation

Step 1 – Activate the yeast

Start by mixing the yeast with lukewarm milk and a teaspoon of sugar. Leave the mixture for about 10 minutes so the yeast becomes active.

Step 2 – Prepare the dough

Place the flour in a large bowl. Add salt, oil, the egg and the prepared yeast mixture. Knead everything together until you obtain a soft and smooth dough.

Step 3 – Let the dough rise

Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen cloth and leave the dough in a warm place. Allow it to rest for 45–60 minutes, or until it doubles in size.

Step 4 – Shape the strudel

After the dough has risen, divide it into two equal portions. Roll each portion out with a rolling pin into a rectangle roughly 0.5 cm thick.

Spread the jam evenly across the dough. If desired, sprinkle a little ground walnuts or cinnamon on top for additional flavor. Then carefully roll the dough into a strudel.

Step 5 – Prepare for baking

Place both strudels onto a baking tray lined with baking paper. Let them rest again for 15–20 minutes so the dough relaxes slightly.

Brush the surface with beaten egg.

Step 6 – Bake

Bake the strudels in a preheated oven at 180°C for about 30 minutes, or until they develop a golden-brown color.

Allow the cake to cool slightly. Finally, sprinkle powdered sugar over the top and cut into slices.
